ITSF World Championships 2008

Post by Martyn » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:01 am

I have been told that they will not  be held in Saint-Vincent this year.

They have been exploring various other alternatives.

An official announcement should be made by the end of next week, maybe earlier.

All member federations will be informed of the date and place, and a news item will be posted on their website.

It's going to be in France at the start of 2009, I think.

I'm going to guess Nantes at the start of January.

This is nothing to do with me having any inside information, or anything like that.

I'm not at all convinced by your guess.

Edit: Nantes = France right? Anyone know where? South?!? :D

Hmmm West coast sounds a bit too West and not enough South for my liking...

ITSF World Champs is the one you qualify for though right? Do they have any events for others e.g. like we had UKC / Bristol Open?

Chaz,

Yes. No. But you might think it worth going for the rare opportunity to meet and play pickup with the best players in the world and also to watch them compete in amazingly exciting matchplay.

World Championships/World Cup

We are pleased to let you know that the World Championships will take place in Nantes, France, on January 8-11, 2009.
This will actually be a joint World Championships/World Cup event !

- Place: as far as location is concerned, we needed to move to a more appropriate setting.
This major tournament is rapidly growing, with ever more players attending every year, and it deserves to become a truly major international event, something we could not properly do in Saint-Vincent, Italy.

Nantes (pop. 550 000) is France's sixth largest city, and the largest city in western France.

http://local.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en& ... 640625&z=4

Nantes is just 2 hours from Downtown Paris by high speed train (TGV) which runs every hour.

Also the TGV runs straight from the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport to Nantes Centre in 3 hours.

We will give you more details on the location later on.

In the meantime, for more information on Nantes, see http://www.nantes-tourisme.com/jsp/fich ... 1&LANGUE=1

- Date: as you know one problem we had with the dates of the ITSF Tour is that when it ended - first week-end in October - it left very little time to federations and players to get organized for the World Championships.
This is because in the last 4 years we have been dependent of the date and location of the WCh (Italy at the end of October / beginning of November).
This is why we have chosen to have the WCh in January, to give enough time to everybody to prepare their travels.

In fact, the idea is to run the whole Tour on a calendar year - January to December - so this is the first step towards that.
As well as making it easier for federations and players to get organized, this will make more sense from a logical point of view and for applying the cut-off dates for age limits for junior and senior players.

- Joint WCh/WCup event

This is a new step for table soccer : turning the World Championships into a truly major international event that will take place every year, with more players, more visitors, more "emotion"... ; something cities, promoters, sponsors, tv... will really want to have, something that will make it worth for them competing for.
This will also provide more motivation for national federations and players, with more team events taking place every year.

Because of the late announcement and lack of time for setting up a qualification system, this 2009 World Cup will be an Open event (with a set number of teams and a deadline for confirming participation).

Next week, we will send you more details about this event including information about qualified players, national champions, Wild Cards, number of players per team, deadline for confirming participation, etc.
Also look for information on our website, a new WCh/WCup section will be available soon.

In the meantime, we invite all member federations to start getting ready for this great event, especially those countries whose citizens need visas to travel to Europe.

Start spreading the news : Nantes 2009 will be the best table soccer event ever !

Sounds very cool.

What selection criteria will be used for the UK team for the World Cup (and for the World Championships)?

World Championship selection will use the same system as last year (I'm sure you can dig it out, the announcement for the UK Champs will include this information too).

I expect World Cup selection will be similar to Nations Cup selection, with Rob (as team captain) taking the lead with the final decision being down to the committee.

I am just guessing at this stage!!

I never seem to be able to find flights as cheap as everyone else, so I just wondered if anyone could give me advice on where to look?!

I tried the obvious websites like easyjet, and it came up with like £200!  I'm sure its cheaper than this to get to Nantes.

Either from Bristol or London, both showing high prices! Argggh!

There is always the train - TGV from CDG or Paris, or even driving.  I am certainly thinking of driving (no baggage weight limits, no need for car hire...)

BA fly from Gatwick, which was how I got there last time - ask Paul Martin if he can sort you a cheap deal.
