Oxford Old Boys Match 08/09

Post by Graeme » Thu Apr 23, 2009 2:26 pm

In the last few years the Old Boys Match has been held on one of the weekends early this term. It's coming up to the end of 0th week now, and the Nuneaton tournament is the weekend at the end of 2nd week, so how does Saturday of 3rd week (16 May) sound? Also is anyone willing to volunteer to organise the Old Boy team(s)?

Hmm... not much response from the Old Boys. Maybe you should offer alternative dates too? Like Saturday 9th May (I prefer this lol), or even a Friday evening?

I've just emailed a large contingent of the OBs telling them it's May 16th, unfortunately.

You can email them again, fortunately

Oh and I just realised 9th May is Nuneaton Open. Dunno if many OBs are going to that one?

Yes, that's why Graeme didn't choose 9th May.

Are you free to play on the 16th, Jee?

Friday is probably trickier for people with jobs, I'm guessing.

I'm busy on the 16th unfortunately. Well, let's face it, I'm crap anyway, so nothing lost there :)

I think I'm free. Don't really mind which team I play for (er ... so to speak), given that I'm not a student but I am a current uni member.

Any updates on this? Do both sides have a team?

We've got 5/6 at the mo'.

Still lots of people that I haven't chased, for no reason other than they are not at the top of the members list here.

Yep, that's absolutely correct Dave. Though I'm not sure which year it's in - they never specified that. I think you should ask to be sure

And... here is the current boys team:

Graeme Addison
Mark Nubbert
Mike Hart (somewhat dubiously)
Bernhard Elsner
Lea Kraemer
Chris Chan
Brodie Pearson
Stanislav Burlakov

Looking at the teams it should be a good match, hopefully not too one-sided.

That's the problem with students these days - no ambition. Personally, I'm hoping that we give the current boys a sound thrashing.

And we now have a mystery doubles pair lined up for the match.

Current Oxford Boys 7 - 9 Old Oxford Boys

Full Results (each pair played each opposition pair in a 7-3 format):

COBs
Graeme Addison (Merton) & Mike Hart (Post-doc) W 3 L 1 GD +10
Stanislav Burlakov (St Hilda's) & Chris Chan (St Catz) W 2 L 2 GD +6
Mark Nubbert (St Annes) & Lea Kraemer (Somerville) W 2 L 2 GD -1
Brodie Pearson (Somerville) & Bernhard Elsner (St Annes) W 0 L 4 GD -22

OOBs

Pete Franklin (ex-Trinity) & random partner W 3 L 1 GD +5
Callum Maitland (ex-Merton) & Naeem Kaka (ex-Linacre) W 2 L 2 GD +8
Joules Rathke (ex-Catz) & Dave Carter W 2 L2 GD +2
Emma Carter & Andrei Russel-Gebbet (ex-Peters) W 2 L 2 GD -8

Thanks everyone for coming, was a pretty good match, close as (I) expected. Shame Brodie and Bernhard couldn't win at least a game for the draw but never mind. Good to see all the Old Boys again and to meet Joules, an even Older Old Boy! Post-match curry was entertaining as always.

Also I should just say thanks to Mark Nubbert and Chris Chan who are leaving this year for helping run OUTFC (well, Mark not so much ) and playing well for the team over the past couple of years. Cheers guys, hope you'll be back as Old Boys at some point.
