A Great night at the Bank with 9 players so we held a DYP.

Teams were

Rob D and Famous Al
Dave O and Mike B
Mike A and Ryan
Shafiq and James
Mike F and very random

Best of 7 goals per game world cup group 5 team format.

Team 1 Rob and Famous won winning all their matches with Dave O and Mike B second and Shafiq and James only coming third on goals .

A good fun night and the two tables got a good work out.

Dave

I go home via the M32, so, provided you can navigate me to the right junction, I can give you a lift. :)

Mike, I'll give Dave a lift home, as I live 3 seconds from his house.
I'll be present.

Turns out that Dave Oates meant what he said.

After we had a brilliant night's session foosing last night (9 players in all), he announced that the Bank IS closing it's foos room :(

As I understand it, the main reason is that the pub has not made enough revenue from the foosers that did show up to support the venture (those Bristol foosers who never showed should be ashamed)

Classic problem for pubs with foosers who are not local - we do not drink enough (cos we're driving there) and when we have  tournaments, we tend to bring our own food and drinks, so denying the venue of income.

Dave, as usual, put a brave and positive face on the situation, vowing to find and set up another location for us. He deserves all our praise for the work he put into this venture and all our support for the next one.

This is such a shame.

Id like to thank Dave for the effort he put in. Next time lets hope the management are happy with a revenue split for a room that gets no other use.

The London situation could get dire as well, with Black Horse under threat or dead, and very little player support for IOTG.

Maybe we need to start thinking hard about how to get those ITSF training centres off the ground, although this is of course a longer term prospect...

Unfortunately Dave I suspect an ITSF training centre may also not be supported at the moment .  The player base needs to be expanded somehow first.

Lets hope the ITOG does get enough support to keep going.

I keep hearing this but not sure where the rumour started.

The room was used every Monday for the quiz. It was also used for regular meetings by local organisations such as the Labour Club etc. It was also used for occasional meals and theme nights such as Victorian Evening or Burns Night type events.

Customers could use the room for buffets, family events and parties. The Old Bank also advertised the room as a "Function Room" and were even able to charge for it's hire.

I would imagine that each of these things would generate more income than an evening of foos (after observing a "meeting" of old codgers firing back the Guiness)    This was not the normal leisure equipment siting agreement but a joint project hoping to make more frequent use of the room with anticipated benefits at the bar and in the kitchen.

So, you see, the room is not simply a redundant and dispensible corner of the pub, unfortunately.

I'm sure a lot of investment was made by both parties (installation of security equipment and free buffets etc) hopefully none of this was wasted and lessons will be learned for the future.

The Old Bank

Post by Oatsey » Wed Dec 12, 2007 7:35 pm

Finally some time to do a proper post!

Yes unfortunately the Bank is now history and both Tables will be taken out this Saturday as well as TV / DVD , Foos dude etc.

It was however good while it lasted in many ways just not financially for Colin which is unfortunate an extract from his email is provided below and I am very greatful he agreed to the experiment whcih could have done well:

I would like to personally thank everyone who supported the Bank on Tuesday nights and BYP's it was greatly appreciated.

This really underlines the need to expand the player base from the bottom up  as there are not enough players to sustain things financially
long term otherwise. The out of town location also did not help.

There is also a clear message to support your local venue and spend some money as if they make money foos will remain if not it will go.
The art of the obvious really.

Anyway life moves on , lessons have been learned  and we will as usual regroup and start things somewhere else as the Bush may be next if it gets sold again who knows so we need a back up

FROM COLIN who is an old friend.

To be completely honest I feel I have let you down. I
was every bit as keen as you that this thing should
work, yet I have not been able to make it do so. This
is because all attempts to encourage the use of the
tables have for the most part fallen on deaf ears. You
have outlaid good money on the tables and the support
paraphernalia, and brought people to them. I have not
been able to match that.

It is quite understandable that most of the people
that come with you cannot drink because they drive.
That is unfortunate, but it is a reality that has to
be lived with. The food issue is another unfortunate
failure. Although their requirements were not that
great we would have preferred to have met all food and
drink sales internally, as people constantly turning
up with their own is somewhat irritating, as is the
cleaning up of cans wrappers and spills afterwards.
However the most annoying aspect is that I have
singularly failed to inspire interest from our own
clientele, let alone used the tables to successfully
bring in new trade. This I feel is most unlikely to
change.

etc

Unfortunately Colin can potentially make more money from renting the room as a meeting /function room as Al has said .

I will let you know where we recreate a new foos room/venue next year hopefully.

It was a great night last night and good fun with Mike A, Joe,Herr Fowler,me,James,Al ,Mike B , Dave B and Ryan so it had a good send off!

I think the problem is getting the locals involved, once that happens you're fine. That must have been hard with them being on a different level.

I enjoyed my 4-5 visits to the Bank and am sad no more are to follow.

They weren't making money from the people who went.

But Dave - you are to be congratulated for all your efforts.

PS: Dave when I mentioned ITSF training centre, I mean this is something longer term for the BFA to pursue, perhaps with sponsor support. It's not going to work on a commercial basis for a long time...
