Forum Changes

Post by tom_k » Sun Mar 01, 2009 7:22 pm

If you're wondering why the forum is going through some changes, it's due to a clean install of the forum software, which has become necessary in order for us to install and secure a future upgrade path to PHPBB3.

Apologies for any downtime this week: there will be some when we do a full version upgrade.

At the moment:

There's no more "Real Name" section
The styling has reverted back to the default.

This will continue for this week, and hopefully by the end of the week, we'll be on the shiney new version.

Thanks for your patience on this!

Further to this, the forum will be down from 11am for a server move and upgrade.

I expect to have it back up and running by this evening, if all goes to plan.

Sorry in advance for any inconvenience this might cause, but it has to be done!

Upgrades complete - welcome back.

Changes:
  • Different Webserver: Redirects in place so everything that went to www.britfoos.com/phpBB2/ now goes to forum.britfoos.com/forum
    Complete upgrade to PHPBB3.0.4
    PM limits doubles
    Avatar Limits raised to 10k
As this is a huge change, please PM me with any issues as soon as possible - after you've check the list below of course...

Please Check the following:
  • All your profile settings: particulary, PM preferences, Email preferences.
That you have access to all the forums that you expect (and hopefully, no access to those you don't!)
Known Issues:
  • If your password doesn't work, this is due to UTF-8 encoding changes: please use the PASSWORD RESET FEATURE, just under the login form.
Not all PMs made it through - there are about 15 I had to delete due to character encoding issues

One small thing. My username is:

caféaulait

Before today I could log on with

cafeaulait

Now I have to type the accented version. Minor thing, but threw me for a few seconds as half the time I visit Britfoos I'm on a linux PC and couldn't work out how to get the accents without some help.

Interesting - I can tell you why (probably boring you to tears in the process): PHPBB3 uses UTF-8 encoding, meaning that in the database, the e is stored as an escaped character, whereas before it wasn;t.; So I think that's by design (although not intentional on my part)..

I've noticed a drop in functionality which I hope will be restorable:

1 - Real Names - it would be really helpful to have these back - at least for the memberlist.
2 - SubForum admins - on the old system it was easy to check WG membership and for group mods to add/delete people as required. If we can't it will require a lot more work for forum admins. I'm particularly concerned that the womens forum membership is kept updated with new women who join the forum.

I'd like to post a huge vote of thanks to Tom King for getting the forum up and running again. He has put a huge amount of time and effort into bringing a dangerously old and insecure forum up to date.

Thanks.

Thanks for the input Boris:

The RealNames bit was an Modification for v 2.x of the board;

I'm looking of ways to replicate this, and hoping I can do it natively within the forum by adding some custom user fields. I want to limit the number of addins to only those that are deemed essential, for both security and update reasons.

Re: "on the old system it was easy to check WG membership and for group mods to add/delete people as required."

I'd be surprised if this feature has been removed (but it may have been a Mod?) - I fear it may have "moved" though - will investigate. The whole permissions system has become much more evolved; there are now 4 different types of administrator etc..

I've put these on the list, and will post some feedback when I can.

T

I'll second that - obviously there are going to be teething problems and it is unreasonable to expect everything to work from the word go.

I'll third that.

Tom is doing an incredible amount of work behind the scenes, and it is greatly appreciated

Cheers all for the kind words :)

FYI; Real Name (not a mod) added as a custom profile field. It's a compulsory field, so If anyone edits their profile, or for any new users from now on, it's a must.
It'll only be displayed on that users profile.

p.s, just worked out how to import all the old "real names", so nothing lost: you just have to go to a users profile to see the field

Tables BBCodes now working

Post by tom_k » Tue Mar 03, 2009 11:41 pm

Edit: this still needs some work, so forget about it for now.. ta.

Edit:
Note that any new lines between successive
or tags will get converted into <br />, leaving you with things like </tr> <br /> <tr>. The browser, seeing that these aren't in a row, will put them at the top. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure what can be done about this.

Well, for those of you that get a kick out of this sort of thing, I've managed to create a set of BBcodes for tables;

Examples:

N.b - code is on newlines for clarity, but read my note above.
This is a Table Title or header
This is the left cellThis is the right cell
This is another rowThis is the second cell

Code: Select all

[corners]
[thead]
[th=2]This is a Table Title or header[/th]
[/thead]
[tbody]
This is the left cellThis is the right cell

This is another rowThis is the second cell
[/tbody]
[/corners]
Yet Another Example
CellCell
CellCellCellCell
This row spans 4 columns

Code: Select all

[corners]
[thead]
[th=4]Yet Another Example[/th]
[/thead]
[tbody]
CellCell

CellCellCellCell

This row spans 4 columns
[/tbody]
[/corners]
This is a bit of an experiment, so let's try not to go overboard shall we? (yes DaveZ, I'm looking at you)

Currently the BFA logo links to the forum home page, and doesn't link to the main BFA site at all. (Before the Britfoos logo went to the forum home page, and the BFA logo went to the main page.

Don't know if this is by accident or design.

By design, but only for now; when new sites are released, then there will be a bar at the top; the BFA logo will then always link to the root of the site you're in... it'll make sense soon enough.
Appreciate there isn't currently a link back..

It's good to see that Google Adsense has been added to the forums, this should hopefully bring in some extra revenue (I assume some of it goes to the BFA?). Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Adsense calculate the amount of money owed in relation to the number of hits on the ads? If so, we should set up some form of rota!
