Some thanks from me Sun Nov 04, 2007 1:41 pm
First of all thanks to evreyone for coming and making it such agreat event. In particular a great deal of thanks is owed to Steve and everyone else at warwick for organising the whole competition. The Holywell certainly could not have done it without you.
Thanks to Bill Pope at they Holywell for providing the venue, organising and setting up the excellent lighting on Friday 2nd! Thanks to Katy the Mangeress for providing the excellent range of food and keeping the bar running so well. There was even the chance for some players to play darts, pool and watch the Man Utd Arsenal game - probably not all at the same time.
Thanks also to evryone who supplied tables, helped transport them, carry them and set them up. By the way, most of them (except Paddy's) need to be out of the pub by Tuesday.
Congratulations to everyone who won an event, came second, even won their first match at a tournament. In particular congratulations to all ladies who fought out a tremendously competitive and sporting competition to a very high standard. I will leave it to Steve to put in all the details regarding results etc.
In particular I would like to mention how greatly appreciated it was to have such a responsible glass collector. He actually suffers from Alzheimer's and did a tremndous job.
If I have missed someone out it is not deliberate, just old age catching up with me.
Feedback will be greatly appreciated. There was a request for some healthier food options e.g. fruit - particularly bananas. If people have ideas for sensible additions to the menue let me know. At the next tournament we will aim to put up the munues in advance.
The next event has been pencilled in for Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February 2008. Although many discussions need to take place before this becomes official.

Thank you very much Warwick, Nuneaton guyz and the Holywell!
A great, fun tournament - looking forward to more of these in the future.
A big thumbs up for the Nubbert and Teeb & Steve for their OS and OD wins. (Is Nubbert a Pro-Master now?) Graeme & Zico - you guys did amazing to win NPD. Well deserved wins for all of you.
Personally had quite a poor performance that day...
Whilst being hacked to pieces by Mike Cohen, I let down my partners in OD and NPD. Soz Dave, for bottling and scoring copious amount of own-goals. Soz Rob for not being able to finish your last SP event with a bang.
But it was a great day for Oxford I think.
Managed to get down 16 players, making up about 20% of the turnout for the tournament! :D For many it was their 1st or 2nd Garlando tournament, and the results they achieved were amazing! Some pleasing performances by some of the newer Oxford faces:
1st Place NPD: Graeme Addison & Zico Yung
2nd Place ND: Liam Donovan & Saadat Iftikhar
3rd Place ND: Peter Hedges & Christopher Chan
7th Place OD: Pete Franklin & Mark Nubbert
Roller-ball with Worthington and Carter and Simmo was a great way to finish the evening. I think it is responsible for numerous muscle pains on my arms and shoulders lol.
Scored an "Around-the-world-slingshot" against Steve L. The ball slingshots into the far wall and bounces straight back at 100mph into my own net. Awesome.
Looking forward to the next Garlando tournament... another Holywell or Liverpool or finally the Oxford Open
Now Rob's a pro, I'll need to look for another SP who can carry me :P
PS. Twas the first tournament ever that I didn't face Sarah Brice. Boo.

i would like to say many thanks for the efforts of everyone who helped set up this tourney esp stephen for making this tourney happen Was a really good turnout in the end and was great to meet everyone again and including new faces.
i didnt really started in OS and didnt get that far in it. had to play tom keevill but then rob davey. started off pretty well in the 1st game only losing to him 7-5 but then in the 2nd game my game just fell apart and got hammered 7-1 :( well played rob. I was then got knocked out by mark nubbert with all his filthy goals esp in the 2nd game we played, where he scored 5 filthy goals and winning that game. then losin to him in sweat ball in the 3rd game with another filth.
Me and James didnt really get started in NPD where we should have won pretty much all out games in the groups. the only down side to NPD was that it was first to 6. would have prefered first to 9 as at least u can have more of a chance to get into the game. thanks james for partnering up with me.
Many thanks to nubbert for partnering up with me in OD, wouldnt have got that far without ur help and for once i could snake both ways. had loads of thrilling matches on the way before gettin knocked out by john and dave and ending up 4th and yet again didnt get a trophy :( .... well tho played guys. had to beat a number of good players to get that far, they include phil cutcliffe and phil williams. me and nubbert had a pretty thrilling game against mark nubbert and pete franklin, was quite a filthy match at times. eventually i beat mark after 2 previous attempts in NPD and OS had to play against mr. gerald tan and chris lyall. was a v close and intense game and we were on sweat ball in the final game. i scored my 1st offical hack from my 5 to win the game. sorray i had to do that to u guys.

This was my first tournament and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone was friendly and full of advice, the venue was great as were the staff. Thanks to Paul, WTF and the Holywell for such smooth running. My partner Rob and I were far too exhausted to stay to the end so we left after our final matches were over, so congrats to the winners, even if we had got that far I don't think we'd have had the legs to prevail!
Highlights would have to be:
- Finding the venue on time after realising we'd only brought directions to Hinckley!
- Almost beating Paul Addison and Tom O'Conner in OD, we were 3-1 up in the third
- Giving the Keele boys a run for their money in NPD, we lost 6-5 eventually.
Low's:
- Not being able to even pin the ball for the first half of the day
- Going 2 and out in both open events (as expected)
- Losing all three games in ND, all the teams were of a good standard and it was a shame we came away with three losses
Well what can I say, we never expected to be world beaters but we only won one match, which was a little disappointing, perhaps practicing on something other than Roberto Sport would have helped!
It was good to put some faces to names, those of you that I spoke to.
Looking forwrad to the next one.

Right first things first. Huge thanks to everyone who came and contributed to it's success - I hope you all enjoyed the day!
The ex-Chetwynd/Holywell guys (Bill Ormerod and Paul Addison in particular) have been extremely helpful and welcoming to us and made running this tournament a lot easier, so big thanks to you guys. The landlord Bill was extremely accomodating, putting up some excellent lights just for this tournament at his own expense, letting us re-arrange his room exactly how we wanted it , and charging us very little for the room hire. I thought the food was also of good quality.
My final thanks go to everybody from Warwick who has helped make this tournament happen. Luke for being reliable, organised and as enthusiastic as ever; Nubbert for making several trips up and down the motorway to bring people to the venue; Rich and Colin for helping set up the tables and running the desk when needed (along with Luke); and finally Tom B for running the desk at times, organising the event schedule, bringing people to the venue and helping out where else he could.
*****
A special mention should go to one of our members John Harvey, who despite not being available to play on Saturday, drove the van on Friday and picked up 4 tables, brought them to the venue and helped set them up. He then picked them up today and brought them back to their various locations. He was the only person available to do this and we are indebted to him for his massive contribution, for which he has asked nothing - without him we wouldn't have had a tournament.
*****
Everyone contributed where needed and we worked well as a team, you should all be proud of yourselves. Outside of Warwick, Dave Morgan represented the BFA and was very good at stealing £1 off everyone. :P
For me the tournament was obviously good both for my personal results and as a whole. We didn't get caught up with a back-log of games at any particular point with the last game finishing at midnight. There were quite a few photos taken by Bill and some of the Oxford guys (Chris Chan?) who should be sending them to us shortly. We'll have them up on our website when we get them. :)
Highs:
- Winning OD for the first time! :D :D
- My brother placing 5th in OD at only his second tournament.
- Winning the super melée (lol).
- Having a laugh with people I hadn't seen in ages.
- The good turnout - I'm kinda glad we only gave people 2 weeks notice otherwise we may have struggled for time!
- Nubbert winning OS and Warwick cleaning up in the Open competitions.
- Managing to run a tournament without having to ring Harry for help.
- Holding the rods for Tom whilst he dominated games.
- Scoring loads from defence against Rob and Mike when Tom was going through a rough patch.
Lows:
- Rubbish in singles (standard).
- Nubbert winning his first Open title about 30 seconds before Tom and I won ours...gah!
- Scoring a beautifully awful OG on sweatball on match point (to Tom and I) in the final making that the first set we dropped all day but more importantly meaning Nubbert won his Open title before we did...gah!
Cheers for partnering me Tom, thought we made a great team (again - so far we've come 3rd and 1st in the 2 tournaments we've played together). When one of us was playing badly the other stepped his game up.
Thankyou everyone :)

Thanks to The Warwickians Sun Nov 04, 2007 10:05 pm
No one should be in any doubt that this Tournament would not have happened without the work put into it by "The Warwickians" - Steve Lyall, Tom Burdett and all the other guys.
Most of you will know that we moved from the Chetwynd to The Holywell just 3 weeks ago, and we're delighted to be on the map already.
Bill Pope, our landlord is very supportive (he even pays the game) and was very impressed with the organisation of the event. This is important as he has readily agreed to host further events - credit again to "The Warwickians".
As you can see The Holywell can easily accommodate 15+ tables. As such I believe it will become a major centre for future events.
Thanks for your support and we and look forward to welcoming you again.
Best Regards
Hand of Doom

What a Saturday!!
Fantastic turnout from a tournament which was only arranged a couple of weeks ago............Garlando is very much alive and well, thank you.
My player of the tournament: Andrew Nubbert
Steve Davis once said something along the lines of that when you play, you have to" try to play as if it means nothing when in fact it means everything". I believe Andrew showed this in OS when putting out big scalps (including Davey, Carter, and Amsden) to take King Seat and then overcoming a monumental onslaught from John Blanchard which went all the way to the final game, second set. All this whilst seemingly not working up a sweat. :!: His play showed amazing variety of, well, just about everything really - I loved his 2 to 3 bar on the run passes straight to push side dinks, baffling the defenders. Open Singles champion, take a bow.
Warwick doubled brilliantly when Tom and Steve took Open Doubles, fighting off a 3 game sweatball challenge from Rob & Mike.
BOTH these finals were played at the same time and simultaneously reached critical stages, great atmosphere and entertainment for those who were there watching.
Curse of the tournament: Graeme Addison, who was the bane of my life, knocked me from OS on sweatball after I initially trounced him, and then scored the winner against Phil Williams and myself, again on sweatball, in the No Pro Dubs final. A good player, genuinley nice guy on and off the table and one to watch out for in the future.
Thanks to Dave Carter who persuaded me to come, (even if his PM contained a whopping food lie  ), to Phil Williams (nearly mate, one ball that's all) and Chris Haddon (we never really got started did we?) for being my dubs partners.
Sweet to see John Blanchard, John Worthington, Dave Morgan and Phil Cutliffe amongst other old faces again.
Awesome event run by Warwick guys and staged by the ex Chetwyninans - thank you all for a terrific event. If my conversation with Paul Addison (no relation to Graeme) bears fruit, we may possibly have one of these every 3 months. Looking forward to the next one already.
Garlando has showed that its a very popular table and that even with short notice, the mere whiff of a tournament brings loads of people out to play.
Those who could have gone but chose not to missed out BIG time.

Awesome tournament. Shame there aren't more one-day garlando tournaments about. Well done to everyone involved. Great to see old friends after such a long time off.
John Worthington was his old majestic self again, scoring amazing goals throughout, and even more remarkably - not a single own goal in OD. Thanks buddy! Shame my snakey went walkies.
Look forward t' next one.

I really enjoyed this tournament and I'd like to say thanks to Paul, Bill & the other ex-Chetwynd chaps, and to Steve, Tom, Luke and the other Warwick guys for putting it all together at fairly short notice and running everything smoothly. The venue was ideal - friendly service, good food, good atmosphere.
As usual I was rubbish up front but playing fairly well at the back. I was disappointed to go out of OS to Scott Walding after being one game up, though my previous sweat-ball win against Luke Ashley was satisfying. It went to the wire (5-3 4-5 5-4) and I expected to bottle it after having missed a chance at 4-3 in the second, but somehow managed to filth my way over the line in the third. I've lost plenty of games against Warwick snakers so I was pleased with the win even though it wasn't a great game - sorry for the filth, Luke.
Doubles was more enjoyable, and I thought me and Mark Nubbert played well together. We started NPD pretty well, beating Simmo & James 6-2 and then Gerald & Chris 6-3, but then we lost to Bodger & Badger ( ) and Chris & Colin. The last one was, I think, 2-6, which meant we missed out on the knockouts on goal difference. Irritating after a good start, but the format gave a certain amount of unpredictability: our first two games would have been a lot closer if we hadn't got ahead quickly in each through some quality hacking and midfield snakes from Mark. These were usually good for a goal or two in each match. :D
OD was probably the highlight for me. Mark & I got knocked out of the winners' bracket in our second game by Jee Ha & Dave but we then won several games in the losers' bracket, against Paul Addison & Tom O'Connor, Bill & Indy and Mike C & Frank the Tank. Bill's blocking of shots from defence is quite unnerving (it was as much of a challenge to get the ball up-field as it was to pull out a shot on goal) but Mark kept up good possession to enable a 5-4 5-4 win which probably should have gone to three sets. Beating Mike & Frank in two was a satisfying win - I always seem to come up against Mike at some point, and after he'd fooled me with a short push-kick I found an extra gear and started nailing far post pulls. We lost to Andrew Nubbert (player of the tournament) & Simmo in a fairly close game, probably decided by the variety in their styles of play when they switched around. 7th was a good result for us and I hope we can pair up again in the future - cheers, Mark. 8)
I was pleased to see John Blanchard (2nd in OS and 5th in OD) and Dave Carter (5th in OS and 3rd in OD) doing so well when they don't attend tournaments regularly these days. As Jee Ha has already said, we also had a good turn-out of new players from Oxford, so well done to those guys for impressive first tourney placings. Good stuff.
And I will add to the pile of plaudits for Andrew Nubbert. The Open Singles final was made all the more exciting for the spectators by not having the usual suspects competing: someone commented that it was amusing that both players kept changing their main shot (which probably wouldn't have been the case with Rob, Alex etc.). Andrew was trying new things all the time, including an innovative shot which he may have made up on the spot - spooning it back from the near man on the 3-bar for a hack from the second man on the 5-bar. Greatly entertaining stuff - congratulations on a great performance. :)
So thanks again to everyone involved: if there are more events at the Holywell then you can rest assured there should be good turn-outs from the strength of the inaugural tournament.
Pete

Cracking tourney: excellent organisation, perfect venue, high turnout.
Congrats to the Warwick lads and (ex-)Chetwynd guys for a winning combined effort. I can really see this becoming the staple garlando fixture for next year if the landlord is happy.
On a personal note I was fairly happy with my play, it appears I have some semblance of 3-bar again, it was nice to give John Blanchard a decent game but depressing to lose to Dave Bareham's skank yet again. Well done also to Pete Hedges for playing great and giving me a scare in the first round, nice to have an early meat-ball to get the adrenhaline going...
We had a pretty unlucky OD draw, disappointing to lose to Mike A and Rob D after a reasonable close one and then to go out to an on form Czech pair. Jee-ha was awesome at times, nice work.
I had a good day even though I spent a large proportion arsing about with the BFA database! Great to see a huge Oxford contingent back, the peeps at OUTFC are doing a great job of getting the Oxford scene back up towards it's former glory!
I didn't really many Warwicker's 'cept an off-form Chris Haigh, well done for cleaning up the Open events though. Looking forward very much to the next one, would be great to have a 2-dayer there at one point!
